GEO Explained: How to Get Your Brand Recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity and GeminiDigital Marketing
Summary: Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) makes your brand visible inside AI assistant answers. Learn what influences recommendations and how to build AI visibility.

More buyers start their research by asking an AI assistant: "What's the best Shopify agency for a small brand?" or "Which ERP is right for a 50-person manufacturer?" GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the discipline of making sure your brand shows up — accurately — in those answers.

How AI assistants form recommendations

AI assistants generate answers from two broad sources: knowledge learned during training and, increasingly, live web search results retrieved at the time of the question. Assistants with browsing (such as Perplexity, ChatGPT search, Gemini and Copilot) cite web pages directly. That means GEO overlaps heavily with SEO, but it puts extra weight on:

  • Mentions across trusted third-party sources — reviews, directories, industry articles and comparison pages.
  • Clear, consistent brand facts — what you do, who you serve, where you are and what makes you different.
  • Quotable content — specific, well-structured statements and data that are easy to cite.

Five GEO building blocks

1. Allow AI crawlers

Check your robots.txt. If you block bots such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot, your content cannot be retrieved for their answers. Decide deliberately which to allow.

2. Publish an llms.txt file

An llms.txt file at your domain root offers AI systems a concise, Markdown summary of your business with links to key pages. It is a simple, low-effort addition.

3. Strengthen your entity

Make sure your organization is described consistently on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, industry directories and review platforms. Use Organization schema with sameAs links to your official profiles.

4. Earn third-party coverage

AI answers often lean on lists, reviews and expert roundups. Digital PR, guest expertise and genuine customer reviews increase the chance that your brand is part of the conversation.

5. Write for questions

Create pages that answer the real questions buyers ask, including comparisons and "best for" scenarios, stated plainly and backed by specifics.

Measuring GEO

Build a list of 20–50 buyer prompts relevant to your services and locations. Each month, run them in the major assistants and record whether your brand is mentioned, recommended or linked. Track the trend over time rather than any single answer, since AI output varies between sessions.

FAQs

Is GEO the same as SEO?

They overlap. Strong SEO helps GEO because many assistants rely on search results. GEO adds focus on brand mentions, entity consistency and AI crawler access.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Organic AI answers cannot be bought. Visibility comes from being a credible, well-documented brand across the web.

What is the fastest GEO win?

Make sure AI crawlers are allowed, publish llms.txt, fix inconsistent business information and add clear FAQ content to your key service pages.
